SOAR offers more than 70 classes on a variety of topics during each of its two, six-week terms. Most consist of a single, two-hour class meeting. Others may involve multiple class sessions. All SOAR classes meet for two-hour blocks: mornings, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, or afternoons, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. The number of sessions allotted to a specific course is determined by each faculty member in consultation with the Society’s Curriculum and Instruction Committee. Class size, too, remains at the discretion of each instructor and is determined by several different factors: personal preference; the teaching style to be employed (lecture, discussion, etc.); the availability of equipment needed to teach the class effectively (e.g. computers); and room capacity.
Most, but not all, SOAR classes meet at Wayne State University’s Oakland Center, 33737 West Twelve Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Michigan. For a number of different reasons, classes may meet elsewhere: e.g. the Birmingham Temple, the Farmington Hills Library, the Detroit Institute of Arts, etc.
