About
Who We Are
SOAR’S mission is to enhance the quality of life of members (and participants) by providing diverse, non-credit academic lectures, classes, field trips, special events, shared interest groups, study groups, and other activities. SOAR’s membership includes older adults and seniors from across the nation who take the time to explore and enjoy our programs.
Anyone with a curious mind and a passion for learning is welcome.
An early innovator in the field of lifelong learning, SOAR believes all older adults, regardless of their geography, economic status, gender, ability or digital competency can benefit from access to SOAR’s lifelong learning, academic-style lectures and classes. SOAR’s goal is to enable its members to experience better mental and emotional health while enjoying social connectedness, cultural events and personal growth.
SOAR is nonprofit community organization powered by volunteers: committees are chaired by volunteers, and SOAR’s instructors donate their time and talents. In the increasingly crowded – and for-profit – industry of lifelong learning, SOAR sets itself apart by remaining connected to and serving its local community and collaborating with universities and other professional associations to recruit educators who are considered thought and research leaders in their academic, professional, and cultural fields.
SOAR has been affiliated with Wayne State University since its founding. In 2011, SOAR became an independent 501c3. In late 2021, SOAR relocated to the Hawk Community Center in Farmington Hills. SOAR classes are now offered either via Zoom or in-person at the Hawk where classrooms are outfitted with hearing loop technology and large screens to ensure all can see and hear without interruption.
